How to deal with Flea Bites on Humans

Fleas not only bite and live on animals but they bite on humans too. There are different types of fleas like dog flea, human flea or cat flea that can bite humans. With the use of their jaws, these fleas cut through the human skin and excretes their saliva which contains anticoagulants and enzymes. These anticoagulants prevent clotting of blood and thus enable these fleas to suck on blood, while the enzymes are the cause of allergic reactions on people.

One of the characteristic human reactions to flea bites is the formation of small, red, hard, slightly raised and itching spots without any swelling. Some flow of blood can also take place, particularly when the bitten part is scratched. The single biting point made by the flea is normally apparent at the centre of each dot. Flea bites on humans are normally seen on ankles and legs and reaction to the bites of each person is different from the other. Before you run for your family doctor, you can try some of these home remedies for fleas control:

· It is very important to cleanse the affected area of the body first. Use an antiseptic soap or lotion to wash the area and use cold water instead of hot or warm water, as it can stimulate itching.

· Place an ice pack over the affected area, which will help in reducing the inflammation of the bites.

· Avoid scratching the affected area as it can open the wound and may lead to secondary infections.

· You can apply a mild steroid cream, which will help in the reduction of inflammation quickly. You can also use calamine lotion, if it is easily available.

· Often, the flea bites on humans can be very itch prone; therefore an oral dosage of anti-histamine can be very effective to relieve itching. Itching causes more pain in the bite, and also slows down the healing procedure.

However, treatment of flea bites is not a permanent solution to the problem. In order to stay away from further flea bites, the only way out is to totally get rid of fleas by killing fleas in the house, garden, backyard and on the pets. You need to frequently clean the house and regularly wash all the fabrics of the house like curtains, rubs and carpets.
